Day Skipper - coming soon!

Take your Day Skipper and Competent Crew with us from Lefkas in Greece, coming in 2018

Why do your Day Skipper?

If your aim is to regularly charter yachts for holidays then we would recommend our Day Skipper course from the Nautica Bay Beach Club in Lefkas which requires some previous experience of yachting, but not a great deal! Our Day Skipper (non-tidal) course* lasts 5 or 6 days: five days practical on-the-water tuition with a bonus day of sailing or relaxing in our beautiful surroundings.

Candidates can either live-aboard their yacht or stay at the Nautica bay hotel, spending their days cruising and learning new skills in some of the most idyllic sailing grounds in the Med. You will visit harbours and anchorages in warm weather and enjoy fabulous Greek hospitality all week.

*Candidates can add a tidal extension to their qualification on return to the UK in 1-2 days.

An element of theory is required and this will be assessed during the practical element of the course. We do recommend candidates complete the Day Skipper theory before arrival. Try this free online trial of the Day Skipper theory course. Free online trial

About the course

This is a beginner skippering course, and at the end of it, the candidate will be able to undertake short passages by day in familiar waters. Candidates can live-on-board or stay in the hotel and the course includes 5 days of tuition with practical hands-on sailing every day.

There is also a day off when you can relax in the sun, take in the sights of Porto heli, perhaps try a dinghy at our club or go yacht-cruising again! The Day Skipper course will show you the difference between being crew and being the person pro-actively in charge.

You will concentrate on pilotage, navigation and handling the yacht in port, under engine and sail. You will be taught seamanship skills, and you will sail a night passage thorugh shipping lanes.

This course is your gateway for cruising to wonderful new places, idyllic sunsets, anchorages in crystal clear waters and barbeques in secluded bays!

Theory course:

We recommend taking the theory course in the UK before departure. This can be done quite easily, and online using a home-learning programme. Then, upon successful completion of your practical week away, you will be fully qualified to charter a boat for week 2. Check out the Free online trial of the Day Skipper theory course with Nav at Home.

Basic course content:

Navigation and pilotage, (compass & chart work), what to do in emergency situations, yacht handling under power and sail, yacht maintenance, passage planning and night-time sailing.

How it works

Our course runs for a full week, and you will receive 5 days of practical tuition and 1 day off for free-sailing or relaxing whilst living aboard your yacht. Solo travellers can take a double cabin for a supplement, but it is more economical to book the course as a group of two sharing a cabin. We often mix Day Skipper with Competent Crew candidates so that skills can be shared.

Living aboard gives you time to enjoy and explore some of the islands and destinations on the classic bareboat itinerary, do some sun bathing and enjoy the local culture, the harbourside Taverna’s as well as having enough time to focus on your training and complete the course syllabus.

Often, guests will choose to extend their stay in our Beachclub in Vassiliki or take a Bareboat of flotilla yacht charter for week two. Generally, our courses are limited to 5 or 6 persons per 3 cabin yacht and we often mix Day Skipper with Competent Crew so that skills can be shared. Our experienced instructors are all fluent English speakers with an intimate knowledge of the area.

Assumed Knowledge

Our course covers the practical aspects of Day Skipper and we recommend candidates take the Day Skipper theory course before the practical. To join the course we assume you have knowledge in basic navigation and sailing.

The navigation should be that required to work out an Estimated Position, basic chart work and seamanship.

The Day Skipper shore-based course gives ideal training for this. Sailing ability can be defined as being able to sail around a triangular course, understanding different angles of sailing.

Day Skipper / Competent Crew Requirements

Minimum age: 16 years

As a guide we recommend pre-course experience: At least 100 miles sea time (5 days/trips) and 4 hours of night sailing.

Assumed knowledge: That you will have basic navigation and helmsmanship. It is recommended that the theory course be completed beforehand which can be done online. See below.
