It’s a lot of fun to learn, (even a life-changing experience for some), and made even better with our very own, and rather brilliant Royal Yachting Association instructors on hand to help you every step of the way.

Join our free ‘Start Windsurfing’ lesson and as a complete beginner, you will learn to sail around a triangular course in no time, enjoying the warm waters and a gentle breeze, which is how a typical day in our Mediterranean paradise starts.

What to expect

We’ll start with a short, shore-based introduction on a windsurfing simulator and very soon after you’ll be on a windsurf board, setting off in warm waters and a light morning breeze under your own sail power.

It’s an exciting time and after this first ‘Starter’ lesson, you should be equipped with the skills to ‘free-sail’ our beginner windsurf boards (on your own) for the rest of your week, in light conditions. Our beach team will still be on hand to help you rig and get launched throughout the week, and our safety-support boats will always be on hand when you sail.

Our ‘Start Windsurfing’ and ‘Start Sailing’ lessons are free, but please pre-book them before you travel, which is easy to do. They will run on day one or two of your holiday and are for ages 14+. Under 13’s can join our free kid's club (5 days) with sailing and windsurf tasters. If you’d like more tuition, then try our Level 1 RYA course for a special price from £69 for 8-10 hours tuition.

RYA Level 1 ‘Start Windsurfing’ course

  • RYA Level 1 course – £69
  • Available at all centres
  • 8-10 hours tuition* over 2-4 days
  • Ocean Elements ‘Fast Forward’ Learning groups
  • Small group sizes: (6 students max)
  • Ability after the course: Able to windsurf in light winds
  • Book before you depart or on arrival

What you’ll learn

After taking part in our free ‘Start Windsurfing’ lesson, it’s a great time to move up a gear and get some focussed tuition from our team. The Level 1 RYA course is very practical and almost all of it is enjoyed on-the-water with lots of windsurfing in fair conditions.

This course teaches you the basics of windsurfing using the right equipment and by the end of the course, you’ll have learned how to windsurf to a chosen point on the water and return to where you started from in light winds. We'll cover rigging of kit, launching and landing and a little bit of theory to bring it all nicely together. You could also come away with your RYA Level 1 Start Windsurfing certificate.

*Level 1 is spread over 2 to 4 days (8-10 hours tuition) with lots of opportunities to free-sail and practice in between. The paid-for element of this course is 6-8 hours and will follow on from our (free) 3-hour ‘Start Windsurf’ lesson which you’ll need to attend.

Courses are for ages 14+. Under 13’s can join our free kid's club (5 days) with sailing and windsurf tasters; 8-12’s can join our Youth Squad for dedicated tuition.

What’s the course like?

Level 1 Windsurfing is an exciting course! It’s easy for all fitness levels (young and old) and our instructors always make it fun and enjoyable. We operate our ‘Fast Forward’ learning group sessions with 6 students (max) to 1 instructor which quickens the learning curve. You’ll progress at your own pace and enjoy making new sailing friends in our sociable learning groups.

We run the course in the mornings, in calm conditions. After a short session of shore-based training using a windsurf simulator to learn basic rig and board controls it’s out on the water where the excitement begins, with a support boat and instructor always close by. Windsurfing in warm water, using our modern and up-to-date kit with lots of support from our team means you’ll progress quickly and very soon you’ll be windsurfing along shortly after you get started.

After your course, you’ll be able to windsurf in light winds. You’ll also receive an RYA Level 1 ‘Start Windsurfing’ certificate to hang on your wall! If you’re staying for two weeks, then why not take your Level 2 as well?

Top notch instructors

Over the last ten years, we’ve taught thousands of guests to learn to windsurf and sail. It’s our energetic, top-notch team of British RYA instructors that make it all so great! They run sociable group learning sessions with a priority on fast progression and fun, using the Ocean Elements ‘Fast Forward’ learning principles. All our centres have the right conditions and kit to enable fast progression and we love teaching people to sail. After all, it’s what we do best and perhaps why we scored 98% ‘Excellent’ from our client surveys from 2018.

We pick our staff for their friendly and outgoing natures and they’re always on hand to help you rig up, get launched and teach you some tips - whether you’re in, or outside of a lesson. They love to share the knowledge and talk about their favourite subject.

Where’s best to learn?

All our resorts offer perfect conditions for beginner windsurfers, where reliable winds and warm, waist deep waters (along with free tuition!) help to quicken the learning curve.

Learning has never been easier with our latest generation of wide and stable beginner boards with small sails and lightweight rigs. The Start Windsurfing course takes place during the mornings when the breeze is light and the sea is flat; all our resorts follow the same weather pattern.

Surf Hotel in Vassiliki our specialist windsurf centre and has the greatest range of kit and tuition. But all our centres are ideal for beginners, especially Nautica Bay in Porto Heli.

Private tuition

Our holidays include enough tuition to get started. However, you may prefer some extra, more focused tuition, either as a ‘1-on-1 or ‘1-on-2’ session to take alongside (or instead of) a full RYA course. ‘Privates’, as we call them, will help you focus on a specific technique – from nailing your first turn as a beginner, or more progressive skills like beachstarts or carve gybes. Privates are available as a paid-for extra in resort and they start at £34 per hour with support boat cover.

The very best Instructors

Our friendly team of British instructors are all fully qualified RYA (Royal Yachting Association) professionals. They are on hand to help you rig-up and launch, teach sailing groups, give advice, tips and guidance for all levels from beginner to advanced. They play an active role both on and off the water in all parts of your holiday, so outside of lessons they’re fun and approachable and love to impart tips and advice.

What to wear and bring

  • Wear shorts you can get wet
  • Wear a quick dry T-shirt or Rash Vest (can buy these locally from us)
  • Do wear sunglasses (can buy an elasticated band, locally from us)
  • Do wear plenty of sun cream
  • Some sailors wear a sun hat or cap for extra protection
  • No need for wetsuits - the water is very warm - even in May!
  • We supply buoyancy aids and helmets for kids
Top tip:

We sell sailing gloves, rash vests, quick dry T-Shirts, sunglasses bands at all our centres

Fantastic Holiday!

“The hotel is right on the beach and has its own sunbeds for guest use. The main reason for going was the sailing and we have nothing but praise for the Ocean Elements staff, right from airport pickup they were friendly and helpful. The watersports on offer were varied and whilst there was always someone there to assist - we never felt we pushed into anything.

The intention was for my husband to attend the RYA Level 1 course and for me to sunbathe and read books. Once I saw the setup and felt the genuine enthusiasm of all the staff, I decided to have a go as well. I am a large lady with no previous experience but the staff never made me feel uncomfortable and were always encouraging and full of praise.

Thanks in particular to Tom and Josh for getting me through my Level 1. We’ll definitely be back next year for level 2!!”
