RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Theory Course

The RYA Day Skipper theory course is a fully comprehensive course and a recognised qualification covering chart work, tidal systems, seamanship, meteorology and collision regulations. It can be taken as a 5 day course in a classroom or online using our E-Learning platform.

If you haven’t already done the RYA Day Skipper Theory course and you wish to take your Day Skipper, then you’ll need to complete it before you arrive. We can include a home based E-learning package which is priced from £245 from our supplier, an RYA Recognised Training Centre ‘Sailing Courses Online’.

How long does it take?

Our E-Learning course gives you complete control of your study time and rate of progress. You will have unlimited access to qualified RYA Yachtmaster shorebased instructors (via email, phone, Skype and FaceTime) who can assist you and give guidance on any issues and questions that may arise.

The recommended online study time is 40 hours, depending on how quickly you pick things up. There is an initial 6 months time limit to complete the course with a further 6 month extension available at a cost of an additional £30 fee.

Ability after Course This course equips you with enough knowledge to understand how to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising. Successfully gaining your certificate will enable you to confidently progress with your Day Skipper practical course.

Online RYA Day Skipper Theory

Our online theory course is delivered by Sailing Course Online, an RYA Recognised Training Centre specialising in online training. The online course can be completed in the comfort of your own home (in 30 to 40 hours) and you will have the full support from instructors at Sailing Courses Online to help with any questions that may arise. A welcome pack including the Day Skipper theory course book, plotter and practice charts are sent to you once you are registered on the course. 

On completion you will have a good working knowledge of navigation by chart work, tidal systems, seamanship, meteorology and much more. You will also have an invaluable insight into how to make decisions on board and stay safe out at sea.
