South Ionian 'Ithaca' Route

Our Classic one-week Flotilla route taking in the beautiful islands of Meganisi, Ithaca and Cephalonia

At a glance

Whether you’re a first-time skipper or a keen yachtsman you’ll really enjoy our one week South Ionian cruise as we tour around the most beautiful islands and anchorages of this idyllic coastline. You can also stop over at our Beach Club in Vassiliki for a complimentary day of water sports, mountain biking, fitness clubs and kids clubs to spice up your week even more.

The following route is a guide and our lead crew may make changes to stopovers to suit the prevailing wind conditions and any local factors. Our two-week flotilla will follow an alternative route with many more stunning stopovers and anchorages.

Arrival day

After a short, 30 minute transfer from Preveza airport, you will arrive at Lefkas marina where you will meet our Ocean Elements crew and be introduced to your yacht. After a short briefing to show you the systems on the boat, it will be time to unpack and get acquainted with your new home before going for a drink and a meal ashore and a chance to meet the other flotilla sailors. Early arrivals will enjoy making use of the marina hotel pool and provisioning for the week at Lefkadas many grocery stores.

Day 1: Lefkas to Sivota

  • 15 miles
  • 3-4 hours sailing
  • A full day of sailing with lunchtime anchorage

After a skippers briefing at the marina cafe (over breakfast) on Monday morning to run through the week’s plans and some technical advice on mooring, anchoring, safety and seamanship, the crew will help you cast off. It’s an easy 15-mile sail south to the pretty harbourside town of Sivota for a group meal ashore. On the way down, you can anchor in one of many bays for a lunchtime swim.

If you’re a little rusty on experience, or a beginner skipper having just completed your RYA Cruising level 2 certificate on our two-week Stay Sail, then our lead crew will be close by to help you set off; and they will even be in Sivota, ready for your arrival, to help you get in. You’ll soon get the hang of it, and don’t forget, they’re only a VHF call away!

Day 2: Sivota to Frikes (Ithaca)

  • 10 miles (or 15 miles)
  • 3-4 hours sailing
  • A full day of sailing with lunchtime anchorage

You can have an easy morning and start when you like, it’s an easy 10-mile sail to Frikes on Ithaca and you can lengthen it by sailing around the island of Atokos for lunch and anchoring in the stunning clearwater of ‘One House Bay’. This route is about 15 miles of easy ‘line-of-sight’ sailing and a culminates in a faster-paced fetch to Frikes in the predominant wind.

Ithaca is steeped in the history of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca and the eponymous hero of Homer’s The Odyssey. On Ithaca, you can enjoy lots of coastal walks and paddleboarding. Join our welcome punch party in and games for the kids (and adults) like our junk model yacht race in the calm water next to the taverna!

Day 3: Frikes to Fiscardo (Cephalonia)

  • 8-9 miles (or 16 miles)
  • 3-5 hours sailing
  • A half day or full day of sailing

On day 3 we set off for the beautiful, buzzing and chic harbour town of Fiskardo. It’s another easy cruise which can be peppered up with a longer sail to circumnavigate the nearby island of Aspro. We like to get you in before 3 pm so you can make the most of this excellent anchorage for clearwater swimming, shopping and cafes.

This ancient town attracts a well-heeled crowd and offers boutique shops and excellent eateries with a strong Italian influence. The surrounding forest has been declared an area of outstanding natural beauty and we love the beautiful lighthouse walk in the morning, followed by a swim before you head off to the next destination.

Day 4: Fiscardo to Vassiliki (or Free-sail)

  • 10 miles
  • 3 hours sailing
  • Visit the Surf Hotel with us or freesail

Thursday is an optional Freesail day. Our lead boat will head straight to Vassiliki and it is your chance to either join them in Vass' and perhaps take part in some complimentary water sports at our Surf hotel; or just relax by the pool and let the kids have fun!

Alternatively, you may cruise elsewhere and explore other islands on your own. Vassiliki is one of Europe's best windsurfing and dinghy sailing venues, ideal for beginners and experts with active clubs for your kids to enjoy. Vassiliki is a pretty harbour town, buzzing with life and a cool surf-style vibe.

Day 5: Vassiliki to Meganisi

  • 17 miles
  • 4-5 hours sailing
  • A full day of sailing with lunchtime anchorage

Whether you chose to visit Vassiliki, Vathi or another beautiful stopover for freesail day, the flotilla will meet up at Vathi on the gorgeous island of Meganissi. Here, we will stop at our favourite waterside taverna and moor up alongside for a group meal ashore and activities like our sailing quiz and games for the kids.

Before dinner, visit the mysterious sunken seaplane just inches from the surface. It sits just a few metres from the shoreline and is located an easy paddleboard or a 10-minute walk away.

Day 6: Meganissi to Lefkas.

  • 10 miles
  • 3-4 hours sailing
  • A full day of sailing with lunchtime anchorage

Do enjoy a morning walk or a jog around the pretty coastline of Meganisi before setting off for Lefkas. There are lots of anchorages on route for a lunchtime swim. You can lengthen the sail home by cruising around Skorpios, the famous island owned by the Onassis family. The final leg normally offers a more exciting sail as you beat home in the prevailing thermal winds.

We like to get back into Lefkas marina for around 4 pm so you can refuel (our lead crew will help you at the fuel jetty) before mooring up in the tranquillity of Lefkas marina. Soon after you moor up, we’ll be aboard to advise you of the next day’s travel plans. Then we like to gather ashore for a farewell drink and awards ceremony in the marina bar.

Day 7: Departure day (Sunday)

If you are on our charter flight, it’s not too early a start in the morning and you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast onboard or ashore at the marina cafes before our transfer coach comes to pick you up for the 30-minute ride to Preveza airport.

If you are on our two-week flotilla, Sunday is a great chance to get an extra day’s sailing and head back out from Lefkas for a freesail day before hooking up with the flotilla again on Monday. You can discuss Flexi Flotilla options with our lead crew so you can carry on sailing while we changeover the new arrivals.
