Ithaca Route

South Ionian 'Ithaca' Route

Our Classic one-week Flotilla route taking in Meganisi, Ithaca and Cephalonia

Taking in the beautiful islands on Meganisi, Ithaca and Cephalonia with beautiful day time anchorages along the way, why not try a stop over at our Beach Club in Vassiliki for Free Sail day for some complimentary dinghy sailing, windsurfing or land-based activities like Yoga and beach fitness or mountain biking.

Or just want to relax at our hotel pool and beach bar for the day! This route can be joined and partly sailed on our Flexi Flotilla programme.

The following route is a guide for most of our one week flotilla holidays starting at Lefkas marina, however the flotilla crew may alter the itinerary each week depending on the prevailing wind conditions and other factors. For two-week flotilla's we run the Lefkas route for week two.

This is a guide itinerary

Average Resort Temps

Day 1: Sunday

Arrival day!

Fly to Preveza airport, (on a Sunday), short 35min transfer to Lefkas marina where you will be met and greeted by Ocean Elements lead crew. Provision in the nearby marina supermarket, then have a drink, enjoy lunch at the many tavernas or a swim in the marina hotel pool (small charge) while you wait for your yacht.

21:30-22:00: Charter flight lands, transfer departs at 22:30

23:20-23:30: Arrive at Lefkas marina. Welcome briefing from lead crew

23:30-23:40: Yacht handover.

These times are a guide and may extend in busy periods

Day 2: Monday

Lefkas marina to Sivota, lying due South. 16nm.

09:00-09:30 Main Skipper's briefing at marina cafe

09:30-10:00 Check-in and departure, bound for Sivota

16:30-17:30 Boats start to arrive in Sivota, but can arrive sooner

Enjoy an easy sail down to Sivota with the predominent wind behind you, making for a satisfyingly long but easy sail for your first day. Sivota is a beautiful natural harbour, very well protected with a pretty village of taverna's and shops surrounding the quay where all boats moor stern-to.

The first night starts with a welcome Punch Party and snacks, (and the punch is quite good!), before a pre-arranged group meal at the excellent restaurant looking out over the bay.

Day 3: Tuesday

Sivota to Frikes, (Ithaca). 9nm.

The sail to Frikes is a pleasant 9 mile southerly leg with easy line-of-sight sailing. Try the lovely anchorage at One House bay which extends the mileage by 2-3 miles and enjoy a stunning clear water bay for swimming and lunch. Frikes is a quaint and small village on Ithaca with many Australian-Greek locals speaking excellent English.

Ithaca is steeped in history relating to Odysseus, the king of Ithaca and is probably best known as the eponymous hero of the Odyssey. Kioni is another popular port, and an enjoyable coastal walk WNW of Frikes.

Once in Frikes, enjoy Paddleboarding and swimming off the rafted yachts. We often arrange a group meal in a beach-side Taverna which fronts onto the water. Idyllic!

Day 4: Wednesday

Frikes to Fiskardo. 7nm.

The sail to Fiskardo is another nice and easy cruise to allow more time on these beautiful islands. Of course yachts can extend their sailing as they choose, but our lead boat will meet you in Fiskardo from 1400 onwards to help you raft up and moor before an afternoon of swimming, paddleboarding or walking around the beautiful streets of the cosmopolitan Fiskardo with its plethora of excellent eateries, shops and cafes all by the water's edge.

The ancient town of Fiskardo is a attracts a well-heeled crowd and offers boutique shopping and the surrounding forest has been declared an area of outstanding natural beauty. We like the beautiful light house walk in the morning followed by a swim and then its off to the next destination!

Day 5: Thursday - Freesail day.

Option 1 - Fiskardo to Vassiliki. 12nm.

Or visit Surf Hotel for watersports

Thursday is an optional Freesail day. Our lead boat will head straight to Vassiliki and it is your chance to either join them in Vass' and perhaps take part in some complimentary watersports (dinghy sailing and windsurfing) at our Surf hotel or just relax by the pool and let the kids have fun!

Alternatively, you may cruise elsewhere and explore the beautiful South Ionian and other islands on your own. Vassiliki is one of Europe's best windsurfing and dinghy sailing spots, ideal for beginners and experts and has beautiful beaches nearby. Vassiliki is a pretty village with lots of colourful restaurants and bars around a buzzing harbour.

Lead boat will go to Vassiliki

Option 2 - Fiskardo to Vathi (Ithaca). 12nm.

If you would prefer to try Vathi then we can recommend this option too! Vathi is the capital of Ithaca and offers a choice of shops, cultural interests and things to do, with superb tavernas and deep water moorings this is a popular stop for many cruising the South Ionian.

By choosing option 2 you will miss out on the Surf hotel and "free" watersports, but it's up to you. We just ask that you meet the crew for Friday evenings stop over at Meganissi or where ever is planned.

Day 6: Friday

Freesail Day continued: Vassiliki or Vathi (Ithaca) to Meganissi. 17nm

Whether you chose to visit Vassiliki, Vathi or another beautiful stopover for free-sail day, we ask that the flotilla makes its way to Meganissi, (coincidentally to another port called Vathi!), for Friday evening to rejoin the lead boat again.

The busy little harbour side village of Meganissi offers some nightlife and well priced tavernas and our lead boat will be there to help you from 1600 onwards.

On your way to Meganisi try from any one of beautiful and secluded easy-holding anchorages for a lunch time swim, our lead crew will give you some tips.

On arrival, go and check out the submerged light aircraft which is a few metres from the shore. You can easily Paddleboard or walk over to it and see this mysterious sunken sea plane just inches from the surface.

Day 7: Saturday

Meganissi to Lefkas. 12nm.

After your stay on the beautiful island of Meganissi, return to Lefkas the next day for a decent sail and stop over for lunch time swimming at one of the many beautiful anchorages along the way. Or, maybe sail around Skorpios, the famous island owned by the Onassis family since 1962, and recently sold to the daughter of the Russian businessman Dmitry Rybolovlev, for a

Or, maybe sail around Skorpios, the famous island owned by the Onassis family since 1962, and recently sold to the daughter of the Russian businessman Dmitry Rybolovlev, for a reported £100 million. At Lefkas our farewell evening meal is always fun!

Yachts often get back into Lefkas marina from 1500-1600 onwards, so that they can prepare for well-priced hand back and relax before changeover day in the excellent facilities in Lefkas marina.

1500-1600 Yachts return and refuel

1630-1800 Handover of boats and deposits administrated

1830-1930 Final presentation, farewells and prize giving!

2000 Social farewell meal for those that would like to join

Day 8: Sunday

Changeover or departure day

0900-1000: This is the approximate time that our transfer departs Lefkas marina for your return flight home

0900-0930: The official hand back time for all yachts, whether flying with us or self-travelling

Two-week flotilla's and Bareboat

If you have booked a second week on board your yacht then you do not need to return to Lefkas marina and hand over. Instead, take Sunday as a free sail day which is great - as you get an extra day sailing!

For Stay & Sail breaks:

If you have booked a Stay and Sail and are due to spend the second week in our Beach club then your transfer will arrive anytime from 0930.

Expect a short 30-40min drive to the excellent Surf Hotel on the southern tip of Lefkada and you will be able to relax and get settled in during the afternoon and even take part in some watersports that same day.

The choice of routes is weather dependent and will be decided upon by the flotilla crew. The Kastos route takes us farther East to the two islands of Kalamos and Kastos, as well as rounding the Southern coast of Lefkas to overnight in Vassiliki harbour. The other two ports are both on Meganissi, a beautiful island, with superb scenery and great flotilla cruising.
