Dinghy Sailing for Intermediates (Level 3)

As an intermediate sailor, you’re going to really excel at our Beach Clubs. After the calm morning conditions have helped you get your sea legs back, or tried out that new spinnaker technique, then get set to revel in the exciting thermal winds which build every afternoon.

It’s easy to see why sailors flock to the Greek islands for their warm waters, easy sailing and reliable conditions. We’ve hand-picked our clubs to ensure every ability is covered from beginner to expert, and we’ve put in our usual formula of epic! That’s great instructors, the best dinghies (including performance boats) and some of the best teaching standards in the Med’

Sailing for Intermediates

If you can already sail, there's no need to join a session (unless you want to), simply choose a dinghy, let the beach team know and head out into our sailing area. Our water sports centre is open each day from 9.30am until the last guest comes off the water and it’ll remain open over lunch, so you can sail non-stop if you want to!

As an Intermediate, you’re going to love all our centres, which have reliable thermal winds and exciting conditions each afternoon. You’ll be able to 'free sail' any of our boats and even try the latest performance boats or fast-catamarans, for no extra charge.

Try our RYA Level 3 course and let us develop your sailing. Our popular courses offer 8-10 hours of tuition for a special price of only £79; great value at £7.90 an hour!

RYA Level 3 ‘Better Sailing’ course

  • RYA Level 1 course – £79
  • 8-10 hours tuition over 2-4 days
  • Available at all centres*
  • Ocean Elements ‘Fast Forward’ learning groups
  • Low 6 to 1 instructor ratio
  • Ability after the course: A confident light-medium wind sailor
  • Book before you depart (recommended) or on arrival

What you’ll learn

Our Level 3 ‘Better Sailing’ course is run by our own team of British RYA instructors and follows our ‘Fast Forward’ coaching techniques. Building upon Level 2 skills, our instructors will cover better boat handling, tacking, gybing, capsize techniques, rigging, launching and safety. They’ll also cover a short introduction to more advanced modules like performance sailing, racing (with fun-races!) and sailing with spinnakers.

Level 3 is spread over 2 to 4 days (8-10 hours tuition) with lots of opportunities to free-sail and practice in between. You should easily come away with your RYA Level 3 certificate. Courses are for ages 14+. Under 13’s can join our free kid's club (5 days) with sailing and windsurf tasters; 8-12’s can join our Youth Squad for dedicated tuition.

*In some centres, Level 3 courses are only bookable on arrival as they require a minimum of 4 participants. If take-up is low, you can take Level 3 skills as private lessons. We will always do the best we can to accommodate.

What’s the course like?

Like all our courses, it’s a fun and practical course and almost all of it is on the water. You’ll quickly develop your sailing with Ocean Elements’ ‘Fast Forward’ coaching techniques and small groups sizes of only 6 students. Group learning helps guests to bond and share experiences for faster learning, and of course - great banter in the bar afterwards!

This course is designed to impart a more advanced knowledge of sailing with refined techniques and to build your confidence in a wider range of wind conditions. Expect time on the water in a wider range of boats to teach you more advanced boat handling skills.

You will also get to experience performance sailing and advanced modules like spinnaker handling and trapezing. We will cover an introduction to racing and the rules with starting techniques, (if the group wishes). We’ll also look at rig tuning and boat set up so you can move onto our advanced modules next time.

Racing

Join in with our fun and light-hearted dinghy races which are held during the week. We’ll give a short introduction to the world of racing so that you can take part in our events with tips on starting, finishing, tactics and the basic rules of racing.

Our racing is aimed at Level 2-3 intermediates to more advanced ‘club racers’ and is very sociable. We generally run a mid-week and end-of-week regatta for class boats like the Laser fleet, and handicap racing for mixed fleets. It’s all about taking part and having fun, (with prizes too!). A great chance to show your competitive side too!

Dinghy Cruising

Discover the adventurous world of dinghy cruising. Take part in our sociable cruises and enjoy the feeling of longer-distance sailing as you cruise in company to a nearby island or beach stopover with instructors and support boats to guide the flotilla.

Our cruises suit single and double handed boats, or family boats with a multiple of crew, so choose your vessel and pick your mates and sign up to join in. You will learn about cruise planning, safety and basic navigation; along with long distance sailing skills to give you a taste for this truly inspirational past-time. The flotilla will often cruise to another island or beach for a mid-morning stopover, to enjoy a swim or a coffee and ice cream. Cruises run from all centres, but we recommend Porto Heli and Horto-Pelion for the best programmes.

Where’s best for Intermediates?

All our resorts offer great conditions for Intermediate sailors, where reliable winds and warm, waist-deep waters (along with expert instructors) help to quicken the learning curve.

We run RYA ‘Better Sailing’ Level 3 courses in all our centres and you’ll get a similar experience in all our Beach Clubs. Learning has never been easier with our up-to-date kit and the Ocean Elements ‘Fast Learning’ techniques.

Check out Nautica Bay in Porto Heli which is our Specialist Sailing Centre - for the greatest range of kit and tuition. Also, check out Surf Hotel in Vassiliki and Hotel Leda in Horto Pelion for exciting conditions and excellent Intermediate to Advanced facilities.

Private tuition

Our holidays include enough tuition to get started. However, you may prefer some extra, more focused tuition, either as a ‘1-on-1 or ‘1-on-2’ session to take alongside (or instead of) a full RYA course. ‘Privates’, as we call them, will help you focus on a specific technique or skill and is very valuable when coupled with lots of time on the water to practice what you’ve learnt. Privates are available as a paid-for extra in resort and they start at £34 per hour with support boat cover.

The very best Instructors

Our friendly team of British instructors are all fully qualified RYA (Royal Yachting Association) professionals. They are on hand to help you rig-up and launch, teach sailing groups, give advice, tips and guidance for all levels from beginner to advanced. They play an active role both on and off the water in all parts of your holiday, so outside of lessons they’re fun and approachable and love to be bought a beer in the bar after your epic sailing lesson!
