Sailing for Intermediates

If you’re a confident intermediate sailor, you’ll enjoy the sailing conditions in all our centres which have reliable thermal winds each day. You’ll be able to 'free sail' any of our boats as conditions allow and even try the latest performance boats for no extra charge. So let us help you advance your sailing, step up from a Laser into a performance boat, or try sailing with spinnakers for the first time.

Try our RYA Level 3 course which is five, half-days of lessons for intermediate sailors and included in the cost of your holiday for no extra charge at participating centres, (see table below). Guests love these courses because they can go home with a new, internationally recognised RYA qualification at the end of their stay. A real achievement and lots of fun completing these sociable courses.

Intermediate Level 3 Course: RYA ‘Better Sailing’

Our Intermediate Level 3 course follows the RYA ‘Better Sailing’ syllabus and is a five, half-day course of lessons, (3 hours a day). It’s a great way to meet other keen sailors and join in with fun races and our accelerated learning programme; made possible by very experienced instructors and the reliable thermal winds all our centres. Group sessions have a maximum 6:1 student/instructor ratio.

Course content

Our instructors will cover better boat handling, tacking, gybing, capsize techniques, rigging, launching and safety. All essential skills from Level 2, but to a higher standard. They’ll also cover a short introduction to more advanced modules like performance sailing and sailing with spinnakers.

Who can do it?

All ages 14+ can join Level 3 and our beach team will get you enrolled on arrival. It’s open to everyone to join, so long as you’re at RYA Level 2 standard which is the equivalent of about 10 days to 2 weeks sailing. Otherwise, you are free to join our Level 2 ‘Improvers’ class.

What to expect?

This course is for confident sailors with about two weeks experience and aims to build upon the skills learned in RYA Level 2. It’s designed to impart a more advanced knowledge of sailing with refined techniques and to build skills and confidence in a wider range of conditions.

Our teaching groups are fun and very sociable. They’ll give you a little shore-based theory, but lots of time on the water in Lasers, Hartley’s, RS’s and Bahia’s to teach you more advanced boat handling skills.

You’ll also benefit from an introduction to performance boats and advanced modules like spinnaker handling and trapezing. We’ll also cover an introduction to racing so you can take part in our fun races during the week. We also spend time on rig tuning and boat set up, so you can move onto the advanced modules next time.

In all our centres we offer mini regattas throughout the week which all levels of sailor can join. Our racing is aimed to be fun and sociable and we generally run a mid-week and end of week regatta.

The racing is aimed at all sailors and is more about taking part and having fun, but it's also great to show your competitive side too!

Dinghy Cruising

Dinghy cruising is a growing pastime. Making a short passage in a small boat is immensely satisfying and of course very enjoyable, made safe by the presence of our support ribs and instructors.

We run at least one or two cruises a week which last for a long half-day and usually stop at another island or harbour for lunch, coffee and ice cream. Cruising helps you get a feel for distance sailing in company and suits both single and double-handed boats. As part of the day, we normally offer technical clinics aimed at planning a cruise and navigational exercises and other cruising skills.

You can sign up for our dinghy cruising days on arrival at our Beach Clubs.

The very best Instructors

Our friendly team of British instructors are all fully qualified RYA (Royal Yachting Association) professionals. They are on hand all day to help rig boats, teach sailing groups, give advice, tips and guidance for all levels from beginner to advanced. They play an active role both on and off the beach in all parts of your holiday, so outside of lessons they are there to help in any way that they can.

Private Tuition

Our holidays include enough tuition to get started. However, you may prefer extra tuition or one-on-one tuition to help focus on a specific technique or skill. Private tuition is available and paid for extra in resort. Lessons start at £29 per hour for one-on-one tuition and support boat cover.
